Save the date: October 16, 2020; talks on race, racism, and stereotypes in healthcare professional education

5 Aug 2020 by Kelly Doherty

Of potential interest to GRECC-sters involved in education:

The VA Boston Associate Chief of Staff for Education Office is planning two educational talks the afternoon of Friday, October 16, 2020 focused on race and stereotypes in educational and healthcare settings.

The first talk, 1:30PM to 2:30PM Eastern (with Q&A and discussion until 3:00 PM), will be given by Dr. David Acosta, the Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer at the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). https://www.aamc.org/who-we-are/our-leadership/biography/david-acosta-md

The second talk, 3:00PM to 4:00PM Eastern, will be given by Dr. Claude Steele. Dr. Steele is a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, an expert in stereotype threat, minority student academic performance, and author of Whistling Vivaldi and Other Clues to How Stereotypes Affect Us. (https://claudesteele.com/)

CE will be offered for both of these talks.

We encourage training and clinical programs to develop programming before and/or after these talks to create an afternoon of learning about race, racism, and stereotypes in healthcare and in education. Ideas for this programming could include small group discussions, review of journal articles, or a book club discussing Dr. Steele’s book (The VA Boston library has ordered several copies).

The VA Boston Diversity Equity and Inclusion Council is available for consultation on program development (email:VHABHSDiversityEquityandInclusionCouncil@va.gov). The Council has a SharePoint with numerous resources:https://dvagov.sharepoint.com/sites/VHABHSDiversity/Resources/Forms/AllItems.aspx?viewid=04c47202%2Dfe6f%2D4a02%2D9e51%2D01578ca4c76e&id=%2Fsites%2FVHABHSDiversity%2FResources%2FRace%2DRacism

There is also a national SharePoint with additional resources.
OMHSP Discrimination, Bias and Equity Resources

We will be sharing more information soon about the afternoon, but wanted to send the save the date now to allow for planning.

Best,
David
