Program Description: Because over 90% of HBPC enrollees are at least 65 years old, HBPC staff needs to be knowledgeable about common health problems of the aged and skilled in care of elderly patients. The goal of this year’s web-based geriatric education series is to address the education gap of VA HBPC staff with respect to certain mental health issues among the elderly Veterans they serve. The purpose of this specific training is to educate HBPC nurses and other healthcare providers about the care of elderly Veterans with PTSD. This webinar will describe common presentations of PTSD in elderly Veterans; explain how HBPC nurses and other clinical staff can support Veterans with PTSD and their caregivers in the home setting; discuss special considerations for Veterans with PTSD and dementia; and identify self-care strategies for caregivers and professionals.
