Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Aging Veterans: Research and Practice
Training Announcement for 9/12 3-4 pm ET: Women who Served during the Vietnam Era: The Impact of Military Service on Later-Life Health
Thursday, Sept. 12, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. ET
Presenter: Brian Smith, PhD
The purpose of the Meeting the Mental Health Needs of Aging Veterans: Research and Practice webinar series is to build and maintain awareness about evidence-based geriatric mental health care among VHA inter-professional clinical staff. The Veteran population is aging, and a large cohort of Vietnam era Veterans is entering their 60’s and 70’s. Many in this group may have behavioral or mental health concerns that require assistance from VHA clinical staff. The need for this training is due to knowledge gaps created by new and emerging geriatric mental health treatment approaches, and improvements and updates to existing care options.
With this training, participants will be able to:
1. summarize the stress exposures that Vietnam Era women Veterans experienced during wartime;
2. describe the associations between both wartime stress exposures and stress-related mental health conditions (i.e., PTSD, depression, and anxiety) and later-life functioning and disability in women Veterans; and
3. discuss the implications of wartime stress exposures, PTSD, and depression for Vietnam Era women Veterans’ cardiometabolic risk.
Registration: To receive credit for attending, VA employees need to register in TMS before the training begins:
